Hong Kong Solid State Lighting Industry Conference - The Road Ahead
The "Hong Kong Solid State Lighting Industry Conference - The Road Ahead" jointly organized by Hong Kong Electronic Industries Association (HKEIA), Hong Kong Electronics & Technology Association (HKETA), Hong Kong Productivity Council (HKPC) and Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC) was successfully held on 29 October 2011 in the HKTDC Hong Kong International Lighting Fair (Autumn Edition). The conference was a kick-off event for a 18-month project, which aims to establish a strategic roadmap for the future developments of solid state lighting industry (commonly referred as LED lighting industry) in Hong Kong, supported by the SME Development Fund of Hong Kong Trade and Industry Department (HKTID).
This conference addressed the needs in LED lighting industry and introduced the roles of HKEIA, HKETA and HKPC with relevant tasks on how to provide supports to LED lighting industry through the funded project. In addition, the china national experts and local industry players also provided updated information of marketing situations and technical aspects of LED lighting industry in Hong Kong and the Mainland.
With rapid development of LED technology in recent years, it is now observed that LED lighting is not only a buzzword, but also a phenomenon to make impact on industries, businesses, and even consumers in view of its district advantages in energy efficiency, life span, design flexibility and etc. for various indoor and outdoor lighting applications. Many companies including SMEs in Hong Kong, the Mainland and even worldwide have intended to promote themselves in this emerging industry. In commenting on the needs of SMEs in LED lighting industry, Mr. Johnny YEUNG, Chairman of the HKEIA, said "With LED lighting posting tremendous market opportunities, there are many new-comers joining the industry as well as those having minimal experience and resources, typically of SMEs. It is critical and essential for them in understanding the whole LED lighting industry value chain with a strategic roadmap for LED lighting industry.", and added "Today's conference is just the beginning of this project, we will later choose the companies for in-depth interviews; the interview reports will be compiled into an in-depth study report and will be shared to the industry. In addition, three workshops for the specific topics and two dissemination seminars will be followed. The projects results will be posted in respective web-sites of HKEIA, HKETA and HKPC."
In overview, the strategic roadmap is critical and essential for the future developments of LED lighting industry in Hong Kong. It can assist Hong Kong SMEs in understanding the value chain of the LED lighting industry; identifying various technologies and their sources required for the LED lighting industry; perceiving the market situations and branding strategy; identifying the patent and copyright situation with relevant strategy; getting the information about the standards and the associated test methods and available testing laboratories. According to the information provided by Mr. Raymond Chiu, Principal Consultant of Hong Kong Productivity Council, the strategic roadmap for Hong Kong's LED lighting industry will be issued in 2nd quarter of 2012.

In the beginning of the conference, Mr. Johnny Yeung (Chairman, HKEIA) gave an opening speech.
Mr. Raymond Chiu (Principal Consultant, Hong Kong Productivity Council) introduced the SME development funded project on strategic roadmap for future development of Hong Kong's solid state lighting industry.
Mr. Yuan FU (Senior Analyst, Manager of Consulting Department of China Solid State Lighting Alliance) gave a presentation on solid state lighting development strategy in China.
Dr. David XIAO (Expert, China National"863" LED Project) pointed out the high power LED technology trend and SSL development in Guangdong.
Dr. Sun TAM (Director of Engineering, Optiled Lighting International Ltd.) provided the audience the right LED lighting solutions in response to the requirements and expectations of end-users.
Mr. Louis TAM (Technical Manager, SGS Hong Kong Limited) introduced the regulatory requirements for solid state lighting products.
Dr. CHEN Haiying (Director of LED Application Development Department, Advanced Photoelectronic Technology Ltd.) introduced the high power LED chip-level lighting source technology and SSL applications.
Mr. Raymond Chiu (Principal Consultant, Hong Kong Productivity Council) and the guest speakers answered the questions from the audience, whom were active in the Q&A session.
