Briefing on Global IP Migration -Using Canada as a Low Tax R&D Centre
Intellectual property is important to our daily lives and industry especially Industrial property, which includes inventions (patents), trademarks and industrial designs. HKEIA attended a briefing section on "Global IP Migration -Using Canada as a Low Tax R&D Centre" which organized by a law firm, Baker & McKenzie.
However, during these difficult times, it is critical that companies continue to invest in research and innovation, but they now must ensure that they optimize free cash flow and reduce global effective tax rates. Many global companies encounter difficulties and restrictions when setting up research facilities in locations such as the US.
In this briefing, the speaker, Mr. Jonathan Garbutt, Barrister & Solicitor of the organizer explained Canada offers R&D tax credits, and quicker and easier immigration and citizenship opportunities. He added its tax laws also allow enterprises to gradually and cost-effectively migrate the ownership of the IP flowing from the R&D to lower-tax jurisdictions.
